It is not suppose to be like this.  You might want to return it for another at an Apple Store.
Working with the store return is easy.  I call Apple support and tell them the problem then ask to have it returned at a local store.  They then setup an appointment for you.  This way you can essentially walk in at that time frame and have it looked at by a person, instead of over the phone, and they will replace it.  They are really good about this stuff.  I have returned two of my 2G.
