Things You May Not Know About iPhone Firmware 2.2
In this video, I give a brief description of the popular features that have been added as a result of iPhone OS 2.2 firmware update. As we all know, the firmware adds Google Street View to the Google Maps application which allows one to zoom down to a street level view of a location. It also makes use of Google Transit to get public transit routes right on your iPhone. With 2.2, you can also download podcasts directly from your iPhone instead of syncing with iTunes. Some things you may not know include security updates that 2.2 fixes: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3318 There are several security fixes that address issues such as visiting a maliciously crafted TIFF image that could reset your iPhone!! Well, I updated to 2.2 - but using PwnageTool on my trusty Mac - the 2.2 FW I updated doesn’t include the Baseband of 2.2 - my iPhone 3G is still running the baseband of 2.1. It’s the Baseband of 2.2 - makes any chance of a software unlock vanish.
So, far - the only thing I’ve noticed is increased battery life and fewer crashes from Safari. I think the features in 2.2 aren’t that “WOW!” - Google streetview is nice I suppose but a COPY/PASTE and MMS would be nicer!

There is a way to get around it though, by installing a custom 2.2 firmware that only has the features like google map street view, they allow you to leave out the thing that messes up the unlock stuff. I don’t know much about this so don’t ask me to explain more.
Interesting points, but do you agree that we are still been choked? I do. The firmware could do allot more then it can now thats why allot of us jailbreak our units. These updates have been good but still the firmware continues to choke our iPhones/Touch’s of a full blown os. I have heard the quote in the past “iPhone OS is built around OS X”, no it is not, it’s a far cry from it. For what ever reason the iPhone Dev team at Apple don’t want to push the barcode & keep it simple.

Street View is not real-time and only good in cities where Google had somebody collect street level pictures using a truck that was fitted with a panorama camera. I imagine it will get dated pretty fast but it should be good for orientation purposes. Also, the feature is not available with IPod Touch - sux.

Came out Friday. But from what I’ve read - despite the new features - people have experienced more bugs! 2.1 seems to be more stable!
Plus - if I ever decide to sell my iPhone - the chances of a soft unlock vanishes with 2.2.

i think it just came out..but im not updating yet, ill give this a while till there is a point to update to 2.2
I updated to the 2.2 firmware. I really like the real-time podcast downloading and that alone makes it worth doing for me. I’d just hope they eventually improve the Youtube app - it’s horrible. They need to at least make it easier to view your Youtube subscriptions with the app. If mobile version of Youtube is more functional then why have the app?
