What exactly is an unlocked iphone and why are they selling for so much on Ebay?

This may sound like a dumb question. But I was looking to buy an iphone. On the apple site, they are $399-$499. Then, on ebay, they are selling unlocked iphones for a lot more. Does that mean that you can use it with any carrier other than AT&T? Is that even legal?

Yes, “unlocked” is an ambigous term collectively referring to iPhones units that have been made to bypass the AT&T registration (”jailbroken”), set up to accept third party applications and games, and have been made to accept most SIM cards (”unlocked”). If you’re interested in such an iPhone I would suggest purchasing a new one from an official retailer and doing this process yourself. All you need is a wireless connection in your home and a little patience, the process would only take around an hour, even for a first-timer.

The most demand for a unlocked iPhone is coming from countries where people have no access to this innovative mobile phone. The iPhone is initially only available in selected country of Europe and United States, so for residents from other regions of the world, the only way they can enjoy the iPhone is to get an unlocked one and use it on other GSM providers. That is the reason why they are particularly interested in unlocked iPhone, so people in countries where it is not available won’t feel left out. This has created a huge demand for unlocked iPhones.
